1. Isn’t adoption really expensive?!
Adopting through foster care in Texas is free in most cases. On top of that, the state often provides a stipend for you to help offset living costs. That would be enough if it stopped there, BUT WAIT!! THERE’S MORE!
When adopting through foster care the child or children will receive full free medical care AND free college tuition at state schools. The State of Texas has done an amazing job at taking away some of the biggest hurdles of adoption for kids in foster care.
However, if you are interested in adopting an infant or internationally there is some cost involved. Domestic infant adoption programs can cost between $35,000 and $100,000 and International adoptions can cost between $30,000 and $100,000.
2. What about birth parents? Do they get to see the kids? Can they ever take them back from me?
This varies based on the program you choose. However, it’s most common for birth parents to not be in the picture and once their rights have been terminated (which has to happen before you can adopt) they can never take them from you.
3. Do I have to be married to adopt?
Every agency has different requirements, but most do not require you to be married.
4. Do I have to own a home?
No. You just have to have a stable living environment.
5. How long does the process to adopt take?
This varies depending on which program you choose. The licensing process usually takes 6-12 months.
6. Won’t bringing troubled kids into our home have a negative effect on our biological kids?
Bringing a new child into your home will impact everyone in the home, but it doesn’t have to be negatively. You get to control the environment in your home and can put any safeguards that are necessary to keep everyone safe.
